Hagar

Pregnant, running away, alone at a spring in the desert. That is where the angel of the LORD found her.

The angel of the LORD, to Hagar

“…the LORD has heard your cry of affliction”

Afterwards she gave Him a name: the God who sees me. She is the only person in the Bible who names God (Genesis 16:13).

The angel of the LORD proceeded: “Behold, you have conceived and will bear a son. And you shall name him Ishmael, for the LORD has heard your cry of affliction.

Mary

Pledged in marriage to Joseph, in a town in Galilee called Nazareth. The angel’s greeting left her greatly troubled.

“Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.”

So the angel told her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.

A widow, walking behind the body of her only son as it was carried out through the town gate.

When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and said, “Do not weep.”

The woman who bled for twelve years

Twelve years of bleeding. Everything she had, spent on physicians, and only worse. She came up through the crowd and touched His cloak.

“Daughter,…your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be free of your affliction.”

She is the only woman in the gospels He calls Daughter.

The Canaanite woman

She kept crying out for her daughter, until His disciples urged Him to send her away. She knelt and asked again.

Jesus, to her

“O woman,…your faith is great! Let it be done for you as you desire.”

“O woman,” Jesus answered, “your faith is great! Let it be done for you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed from that very hour.

Martha

Distracted by all the preparations, serving alone, while her sister sat at the Lord’s feet. For every woman who has ever been the one doing everything.

The woman at the well

A Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well, on her own at the sixth hour. He asked her for a drink.

“I who speak to you am He.”

Many in her town believed in Him because of what she told them.

Jesus answered, “I who speak to you am He.”

Mary Magdalene

At the empty tomb, weeping. She thought He was the gardener.

“Mary.…go and tell My brothers”

The first person on earth to see Him alive, and the first one sent to say so.

Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to Him in Hebrew, “Rabboni!” (which means “Teacher”). “Do not cling to Me,” Jesus said, “for I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go and tell My brothers, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, to My God and your God.’”
